FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one of the most ancient TCM modalities where the needles are inserted at the specific points in the body to promote self healing and regulating of the body, mind and spirit to achieve equilibrium.  The locations of the needles and the depth of the needle insertion are determined by the nature of the complaint and body constitution.

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture treatment is safe and has been used to treat many conditions.  In our clinic, only one-time sterile disposable stainless steel needles are used and inserted at specific points in the patients' bodies.  The used needles are immediately discarded into a safe bio-hazard containers and are NEVER re-used.

What should I do prior to my treatment?

For your first visit, please come in at least 15 minutes earlier than your scheduled appointment to fill out the initial paperwork.  Have a light snack about one hour prior to your appointment.  Do not eat a full meal.  Do not consume any alcoholic beverages or take any recreational drugs.  Make sure you take your prescribed medications if you have certain conditions such as diabetes and hypertension (high blood pressure).  You may be asked to use the restroom prior to your treatment so you will be comfortable throughout your treatment session.  Food and beverages are not allowed in our treatment rooms.

What should I expect during my treatment?

If this is your first treatment, we will perform an initial interview to understand your overall health conditions followed by treatment.  If this is your follow-up treatment, we will perform a brief discussion to understand your progress and the effectiveness from the last treatment, and make any adjustment if necessary.  Cell phone or camera use is strictly prohibited in our treatment rooms in order to respect the privacy of the other patients.

How long is each treatment?

Initial treatments usually take about 60 to 90 minutes which includes a consultation and treatment.  Follow-up treatments are usually 45 to 60 minutes which includes a brief follow-up interview and treatment.

What should I expect after my treatment?

Some patients experience immediate reliefs after the treatment, and some may take a few treatments before the results are shown.  At the end of the treatment, we will recommend you a treatment plan based on your overall health conditions.  We will also advise your follow-up appointments if needed and discuss the next step of your treatment process.

How many treatments will I need?

Usually acute conditions (short history and sudden onset) may take a lesser number of treatments than the chronic conditions (long-term history cases).  However, individual health conditions, age, lifestyles and habits, emotions, and patient's adherence to recommended treatment plans all play very important roles in the determination of the number of treatments.
